To attract inbound links and inspire social media sharing, I created a blog called The Hat Walk for American Hatmakers.

For the first 5 months, I added search engine optimized, focused, topically relevant web copy to a portfolio of landing pages. I simultaneously assembled a freelance team of bloggers, creators, copywriters, and SEOs with whom I developed, edited, and published original, celebrity-driven, photography-driven features about the latest in hat fashions on red carpets and runways.

Creating Link Magnets

To pull ahead of the competition who were sharing catalog photos, we needed high-quality visual content that would set us apart. My content strategy leveraged celebrity photo licensing.

Celebrity photos draw attention, and celebrities are fashion influencers.

Through a novel strategy that leveraged the First Amendment, analytics, and tracking tools, I was able to free the company to legally publish articles about celebrity hat fashion trends without violating copyrights or celebrity likeness rights.

HatWalk became a wholly-owned, lifestyle media brand subsidiary. It gained national attention, attracted thousands of high-authority and organic backlinks, and generated tens of thousands of social media shares. All that authority was transferred to the client’s online store, where the leading advertiser on the site enjoyed not just banners but anchor text links as well.

For the next 3 months, I upped our content creation schedule, producing thought leadership quality content that ranks at scale, which each story created to meet the search volume demands in the category and attract backlinks and social media shares. And since each article was also search engine optimized, they passed topically relevant authority through on-page SEO to the PLPs and PDPs they were created to boost

By the end of the 10th month, American Hatmakers was ranking 1-3 for the most competitive keywords in their industry. They had an effective content marketing strategy that captured to attention and imaginations of their target audience and passed that search engine optimized authority to their online store.

The Hat Walk Blog became a top-ranking destination for 225k monthly visitors searching commercial intent keywords with high conversion probability. Before the HatWalk content marketing program, American Hatmakers relied almost exclusively on PPC and SEM campaigns to drive website traffic growth.

My content marketing strategy cut their customer acquisition costs in half and made them the dominant online retailer in their category. It was one of the most effective link-building strategies I have ever executed and is fully replicable.
