O’Connor Can’t Bump Villaraigosa Below Fold

While the cover of today’s Los Angeles Times has a title case headline that spans the paper’s full width that reads:

Justice O’Connor Retires; Direction of Court Now Hangs in the Balance

The photo, directly beneath it shows Villaraigosa’s Mayoral Parade, with half of a headline below the picture which says:

‘We Need to Start Thinking Big Again’

…in almost the same size. I am surprised that the Mayor of Los Angeles is seen by the Times editorial staff as important enough to share the space above the fold with Justice O’Connor on the day after she resigned from the country’s highest court.

No disrespect to Villaraigosa, but based on the impact Justice O’Connor’s exit could have, it seems as though the front page layout inaccurately reflects the importance of yesterday’s news.
