Is the iPod the Next Betamax?

Reading a story about France’s attempt to force Apple to open up iPods to services other than iTunes, I can’t help but wonder whether or not Apple’s proprietary play might ultimately by their demise, but my associate Austin Hice firmly disagrees. He says he thinks Apple is leading the revolution. And I can’t argue with that statement. But by locking others out of the marketplace through technology, they may very well be making a mistake. As the success of Windows and VHS demonstartes, it’s those technologies which circumvemt initial cost barriers that prevail.
