Gottleib Omits Kirkland from Balanchine Book TV Appearance

According to author/editor Robert Gottlieb, who appeared on Charlie Rose last night to plug his new biography on famed ballet choreographer George Balanchine, legendary ballerina Gelsey Kirkland — who Balanchine made famous — is not worth even a mention. Gottleib mentioned the most important dancers Balanchine worked with without so much as acknowledging Kirkland, who later left Balachine to join the American Ballet Theater.

To bad the politics behind Kirkland and Balanchine’s break up has been carried on by Gottleib. Let’s hope this is not the case in his book, which I haven’t read yet. One would hope that the memory of Kirkland’s artistic greatness would outweigh the personality conflicts led to their disassociation.

IMO, this was bad PR and Gottlieb owes Kirkland and apology.
