Analysts Split Over Sony BMG Anti-Piracy News

Stories in two national dailies today, covering yesterday’s announcement that “the worlds second biggest music corporation is rolling out its latest answer to digital piracy” show industry analysts divided over whether or not the move has teeth.

New York Times digital music beat report Jeff Leeds, in his story titled “Sony BMG Tries to Limit Copying of Latest CD’s,” focusing on the fact that the copy protection software Sony is using will allow consumers to make three CD copies of each disc they buy (but the copied discs cannot be copied) quoted…

Mike McGuire, an analyst at Gartner G2, said the move by Sony BMG “looks to me like a very interesting public negotiation.”

Los Angeles Times expert digital music beat reporter Jon Healey, in his article titled “CDs to Restrict Copying of Songs,” quotes a less agreeable Phil Leigh of Inside Didigital Media — who responding to the fact that since the new software doesn’t work with iPods, Sony has set up a Web site instructing PC users to how to work around the copy protection software and unlock the music — said…

“Basically, music companies are saying, ‘We’re going to lock up the front door of the store now, but the back door is still remaining wide open.”
