Time Out New YorkWho Needs Hollywood? follows host Katie Puckrik and her campy companion, choreographer Marvin Thornton, into Darien, Georgia, where they cast, write and perform a local talent show in 72 hours. Their extravaganza is a hodgepodge of American Indian chants, African rain shouts, country and gospel music, and bagpipes, all emceed by the produce guy at the Piggly Wiggly. Part Daily Show send-up of backwoods eccentrics, part sincere examination of racial relations in the Deep South, the show's message is surprisingly serious: Music can "give the community the excuse it needs to cross some barriers," says one performer. |
